In the latest round of Northern Counties Alsop Trophy games Durham made it three from three after a cracking 15-7 win at Northallerton against Yorkshire. Across the green Durham won on only two rinks with New Herrington’s Garry Wallace’s quartet the pick of the bunch beating Marcus Mosley 27-13. It could have been even better but for last end defeats for Dairy Lane’s Jimmy McAdoo and Marine’s Peter Thomson. The win puts Durham in a good position at the top although there is a break before they tackle Cumbria in the final game at Blackhall on 18 July.

The Durham County women’s Northern Trophy squad bounced back to winning ways with a 7-3 win over Cumbria at Pelton Fell. Across the green it was an even 3-3 split but Newton Hall’s Arlene Stafford’s 27-10 win proved the difference.

After qualifying in the Bowls England Balcomb Trophy last year only to lose in the semi finals, Durham head to Wigton this weekend to play in the regional day. The format has yet again been tinkered with and will now only feature pairs, triples and fours. Durham tackle Cumbria at 9.30am, Northumberland 11pm and finish off with Yorkshire at 4pm.
The County women are also in action this weekend as they head to Hundens for the Walker Cup.
The Vipers young gun Layton Sykes has been included in the England Under 18 squad day on 7 June at Leamington Spa. After missing out last year Sykes will be keen to break into the squad like Darlington Woodland’s Sophie Wood did last year. In the national talent invite two Durham youngsters have received a call up, Owain Moss Wilkin and Olivia Lewis successfully came through last month’s junior development day at Dairy Lane.
Round 4 of the Earl Cup saw leaders Barnes Park lose their unbeaten start as New Herrington rattled of a 5-1 home win. Pemberton’s 5-1 win over North Biddick lifted them up to second place. Holders Silksworth Pumas eased past winless Dairy Lane B 6-0 while Sunderland notched their first win of the season 5-1 against Roker Marine. There are three teams still unbeaten in Division two, leaders Hetton Workmen beat Whitburn 6-0 while second placed Houghton Town had a good 5-1 win at Ryhope. The third unbeaten record belongs to Seaham Town who won 5-1 at South Hylton. Washington search for a win came to an end with a 5-1 win over Thompson Park .
Week two in the Swan Cup saw holders Houghton Dairy Lane beat Seaham Town 5-1 to go top, Roker Marine moved up to second with a 6-0 win over Hylton Colliery Welfare. New Herrington opened their account with a 6-0 win over North Biddick.
Simonside continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 6-0 win over Usworth, Pemberton notched a third win this time 6-0 against Thompson Park. Washington broke their duck with a one shot 4-2 win at winless Whitburn. Houghton Town returned to winning ways with a 5-1 win over South Hylton.
Round two in the Harold Howey saw holder Barnes Park beat North Biddick 3½-½, New Herrington B hold on to second despite losing 3-1 at Hetton Workmen. There were 4-0 away wins for Roker Marine A and Washington B while Pemberton A beat Dairy Lane B 3½-½, the remaining game saw New Herrington A beat Seaham Town 3-1.
In Division 2 on their return to the league Silksworth Pumas are top after a 3-1 home win over Sunderland A, Washington A’s 4-0 win over Roker Marine B moves them upto the second. There were also wins for Hylton CW B, Sunderland B, Thompson Park and Usworth. Following the fire at the Usworth clubhouse the support via the clubs Go Fund Me page has been tremendous, it has currently raised £4,500.
Round two of the Storey Bowl saw holders rack up a second 7-0 win this time over Jarrow West End. Hlyton Colliery Welfare’s 4½-2½ win at Thompson Park moved them up to second. With the Radio 1 music weekend New Herrington reversed the fixture with Houghton Town but still ran out 7-0 winners.
