The popular Hartlepool Masters Pairs competition took place over the Easter weekend, a quality field of thirty two players competed in the Expanded Metal Company sponsored event. In the end it was a Cumbria-Scotland combination that became the 52nd winners. In the final Cumbria’s Stu Irwin and Scottish International Derek Ferguson beat Norfolks Shaun Jones and Aaron Johnson 13-5. Locally the Viper – Hartlepool pairing and former winners Gary Farquhar & Gary R Smith were beaten in the semi finals 9-5 by Johnson.

The latest Open Singles Circuit event was held at Hartlepool, the Vipers Josh Minto (pictured) landed his first OSC success beating former World Under 25 Singles champion Cumbria’s Daniel Poole. In the semi finals Minto beat Hartlepool’s Mark Higgins while Poole ended the Vipers Paul Hartley’s hopes.
There were another couple of PBA Scottish Open Qualifiers held over the weekend, at the Glasgow event Scotland’s Colin Banks came out on top while England’s Lloyd Sabatini secured his place at the Northampton event. The remaining two places will be up for grabs on Saturday as Bromley and Hartlepool both host a qualifier. The Hartlepool qualifier will be live streamed via the Wrongbias Podcast FB & YouTube platforms.
The remaining Houghton club finals have been played. Colin Watson continued his great run by completing a singles double, after already landing the seniors title Watson went on to beat Peter Brickle in the men’s singles. Freddie Fletcher & Gary McPheators landed the pairs while Chris Blake, Patrick and Peter Thomson won the triples. The fours final went right down to the final bowl as Peter Thomson drew in a second shot to get Colin Milburn, Patrick Thomson and Colin Watson over the line 18-17. The women’s triples title went to Jaclyn Classen, Joan Baker and Brenda Robson while Maureen Hall, Evelyn Barkes, Elizabeth Morris and Norma Stephenson notched another fours title.
The Houghton AGM takes place on Saturday at 10am.

The Vipers also concluded there club finals, Josh Minto took the singles and Alan Lawton the seniors version, Maureen Charles secured another ladies singles title. The men’s triples went to Jaxon McKenna, John Leeman and Paul Hartley with Glyn Williams taking the Novice Singles title.

The Earl Cup got the outdoor season underway; holders Silksworth Pumas had a bye. It was a good night for the Houghton Dairy Lane squads, the A team had a good 6-0 at New Herrington while the B team beat newly promoted Usworth 5-1. The result of the night saw last year’s division two champions Sunderland spring a 5-1 win at Barnes Park.
In division two North Biddick beat Washington 6-0 (66-23) and there were 5-1 wins for Hylton Colliery at Ryhope and for Thompson Park at home to Hetton Workmen. The latter game was switched to Thompson Park due to the Hetton green having a few issues. Due to South Hylton being unable to field a team Whitburn were awarded a 6-0 win.
The Sunderland & District are doing a recruitment drive on Sunday, fifteen clubs will be hosting a free Open Day for the public from 1.30pm to approx 4pm.
