Week seven in the Earl Cup saw the holders and table leaders Silksworth Pumas lose their unbeaten record, a 4-2 loss at Dairy Lane A still extends there lead to 3½ points over Marine who were on a bye, third placed Barnes Park missed out on a chance to over Marine as they were beaten at home 5-1 by Dairy Lane B. New Herrington recorded back to back wins this time a 6-0 home win over bottom of the table Seaham Town. Sunderland ended a three game losing streak with a 5-1 home win over Usworth.
In Division two leaders North Biddick bounced back to winning ways with a 6-0 home win over Hetton Workmen. Whitburn stay second with a 5-1 win at Washington, there were 5-1 wins for Thompson Park, Pemberton and Houghton Town.
Round four in the Swan Cup saw new leaders as Barnes Park beat Seaham Town 5-1, Dairl Lane moved to third with a 6-0 win over Marine, holders Silksworth Pumas lost 4-2 at home to Usworth and New Herrington moved to mid table with a 5-1 win over Hetton Workmen who drop to the foot of the table.
In division two Thompson Park’s 6-0 win at Pemberton moves them joint top with North Biddick, the latter ground out a 4-2 win at Houghton Town. South Hylton are still unbeaten after a 5-1 win at Washington.
The Houghton Dairy Lane B team are the early pace setters in the Harold Howey, a 3-1 win at Hylton Colliery kept Dairy Lanes unbeaten record intact. Hetton Workmen’s moved up to second after a 4-0 win over Seaham Town A. Holders Barnes Park have the only other unbeaten record and currently sit in sixth. Dairy Lane A beat North Biddick 4-0 and Whitburn B replicated the score at home to South Hylton. There were mixed fortunes for the two Marine squads, the A team won 3-1 at New Herrington A but the B team lost 4-0 at home to New Herrington A.
Usworth are the new leaders in division two albeit on shots, a 4-0 home win over Roker Park propelled them to the top.Thompson Park’s 3½-½ win over Seaham Town leaves them joint top, a third consecutive win for Washington B 4-0 against Ryhope lifts them to third. There were 3-1 wins for Chester le Street, Pemberton A, Silksowrth Pumas and Whitburn A.
In the Storey Bowl holders Seaham Town made it three out of three with a 6-1 win over New Herrington, Seaham have a 2½ point lead over Thompson Park who won 6½-½ at Houghton Town. The other game saw Hetton Workmen get off the mark with a 6-1 win over Hylton Colliery.

The Bowls England girls Amy Rose qualifier took place at Dunnington at the weekend. It turned out to be a successful day for Durham’s young guns as they racked up three wins to secure a spot at the latter stages down Leamington Spa in August. An opening 18-3 win over a combined Cumbrian/Yorkshire/Northumberland team was backed up with a 24-0 whitewash against Lancashire. That set up a final group decider against Lincolnshire which the Durham squad navigated 20-2 to secure their place at Leamington. The Durham squad was Sophie Wood, Charlotte Williams (Silksworth Pumas), Abi Porter (Darlington RA), Rosie Stoker, Chloe Proctor, Charlotte Welsh (all Lyndhurst), Jessica Cornthwaite (Dairy Lane)
In the boys White Rose at Northallerton it was not to be for the Durham lads, opening day losses to Yorkshire and Cumbria virtually ended Durham’s hopes of qualifying. An 18-3 win over Lancashire was the highlight of the two day event which ended with a heavy loss to Northumberland. Going forward the two days will have been great experience for the very young Durham squad.
There were mixed results for our local teams in the BE Double Fours, Silksworth Pumas beat Jarrow West End 49-23 to set up a clash at Blackhall. Roker Marine ground out a 38-26 win at New Herrington and will host Dairy Lane B who beat Darlington Woodland 39-27. The Dairy Lane A team however lost a thriller at Stockton West End 34-33.
The Durham County Middleton Cup squad get their campaign underway on Saturday as they head to Walkington to face Yorkshire. The other game will see Northumberland host Lancashire at Gosforth.
In the women’s equivalent the Johns Trophy Durham host Cumbria at Pelton Fell.
The County competitions continue this week as the singles and pairs take centre stage, an early result in the singles saw Silksworth Pumas Mal Peach win a thriller against club mate Neil Reid 21-20, Peach will play the winner of club mate Jon Bennett and former County champion Seaham’s Mark Higgins. In the pairs county champions Silksworth’s Jaxon McKenna and David Bolt host Dairy Lane’s B Stewart.
In the women’s competitions New Herrington’s Linda Watson booked a semi final place in the triples with a cracking 15-14 win over Newton Hall’s Christine Budd. In the semi final Watson will face White le Heads Ann Baggett at Consett Park. Dairy Lane’s Norma Stephenson suffered a narrow 21-20 loss to South Parks C Michie. There was better news for Stephenson as they both met in the fours, the Dairy Lane quartet sneaked home 19-17 and will play Consett Parks Teresa Pearson in the semi finals at Pelton Fell.
